The Houston Astros have held on to first place in the American League West Division for most of the season, but now they cling to a 1.5 game lead as the Texas Rangers are breathing down their necks.
On Sunday the Astros got a well timely victory when they scored five runs, with two outs in the top of the ninth inning to avoid a sweep at the hands of the Angels.
The Halo’s were in control for the whole game as their starter Andrew Heaney (6-3, 3.32), tossed five shutout innings allowing six hits, walking two and striking out four.
The Angels bullpen kept the Astros off the bases, allowing just one hit, no runs, no walks and three strikeouts until Huston Street allowed the Astros to rally with two outs while putting up five runs to erase the 3-0 deficit.
Preston Tucker, who struck out after entering the game in the sixth, launched his 13th home run on the season to pull the Astros within 3-1. Then George Springer tripled and scored on an Jose Altuve single. Carlos Correa then followed with his own single moving Altuve into scoring position at second base. Jed Lawrie, who was pinch hitting for Evan Gattis, hit his ninth home run on the season, a three-run shot propelling the Astros into the lead in an improbable comeback.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Angels went down in order as the Astros Luke Gregerson earned his 27th save on the season.
