As the MLB Winter Meetings continue so does the deal making. On Tuesday the Boston Red Sox sent LHP Wade Miley and relief pitcher Jonathan Aro to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for LHP Roenis Elias and relief pitcher Carson Smith.
Miley isn’t new to the trade block, before spending the 2015 season with the Red Sox he spent the previous four seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks. This past season he was 11-11 in 32 starts with a 4.46 ERA. In his rookie season with the D-Backs in 2012 he had an impressive 16-11 record which earned him a spot on the National League All-Star team as well as finishing second in the voting for the National League Rookie of the Year.
It looks as if Miley was the missing piece in the Mariners’ starting rotation after the recent loss of Hisashi Iwakuma who signed a three year deal with the Dodgers just this week.
The Mariners also gained 25 year-old Jonathan Aro in the deal from the Red Sox. Aro was listed as one of the Red Sox top 30 prospects with strong relief outing last year with both Double-A Portland and Triple-A Pawtucket before being promoted to Boston where he made 6 relief appearances which totaled ten and one third innings worth of work.
The Red Sox will receive Carson Smith who had an impressive rookie season in 2015 with the Mariners where he earned thirteen saves along with a 2.31 ERA in seventy innings pitched. Losing Smith in the bullpen is definitely a downfall for the Mariners and an improvement will definitely have to be made there.
Roenis Elias is also headed to the Boston coming off a rough 2015 season with the Mariners where he posted a 5-8 record along with a 4.14 ERA in twenty-two games, twenty of which were starts.
