Class-A Outfielder Of The Week: St. Lucie Mets Wuilmer Becerra
Another Mets star in the making unfolding on the farm.
Updated: May 9 – 1:45 pm
After writing a post last week on how hot Mets prospect Wuilmer Becerra has been, we decided to make him our Class-A Outfielder of the Week, mainly because the kid won’t stop hitting.
The Venezuelan native currently has a 12-game hitting streak, with 10 multi-hit games (six in a row) during that pan.
During the streak he is batting .522 (24 for 46), while also helping the Mets to a 16-13 start, only a .5 game behind the Fort Myers Miracle in the Florida State League South Division.
Over the course of the last week, spanning from May 3 – May 8, Becerra is hitting .500 (8 for 16), with three runs scored and four RBIs.

In 2012 the New York Mets made a trade with the Toronto Blue Jays sending right-handed knuckle baller R.A. Dickey and catchers Josh Thole and Mike Nickeas to Canada and in return for three minor leaguers in catcher Travis d’Arnaud, pitcher Noah Syndergaard and outfielder Wuilmer Becerra, along with veteran catcher John Buck.
The Mets are already reaping the benefits of that trade as both d’Arnaud and Syndergaard are starring on the big club. But the other piece of that trade is starting to take flight in the Florida State League, as Becerra is tearing up Class A Advanced pitching early in the season with his scorching hot bat.
Through his last ten games, the Venezuela native is batting .526 (20 for 38). What is most impressive is that he has four straight multi-hit games and eight in the ten game span.
Becerra isn’t showing much power yet, as he has in his previous two seasons, when he hit a combined 37 doubles, five triples and 16 home runs. But so far this season he is displaying a knack for putting the ball in play, getting on base, as well as hitting for a high batting average.
In just 21 games this season, the Mets right fielder is leading the Florida State League and the team with a .405 batting average. He has hit safely in 17 of his first 21 games, has 11 multi-hit games and currently is enjoying a 10-game hitting streak.
Becerra looks to be a very special player and another great piece from the 2012 trade with the Blue Jays. His power will come as he has shown in the past, and if the Mets organization moves him along at the proper pace, he should be contending for a spot on the major league roster in the coming years.
