Cubs Win!!
After the Cardinals took game one with a 4-0 victory on Friday, the Cubs came into the game looking get back in the game and even the series.
Chicago sent Kyle Hendricks to the mound to face off against Cardinals Jaime Garcia, and both pitchers looked to repeat the dominance from Jon Lester and John Lackey in game one.
The Cubs failed to score in the first, but the Cardinals started where they left off from Friday as Matt Carpenter led off with a home run to put the Cardinals up 1-0.
In the top of the second, Starlin Castro got his first hit of the postseason to lead off the inning, then Austin Jackson grounds into a sure double play, but Kolten Wong threw the ball into the dugout allowing the run to advance to second. Jackson then steals third and Miguel Montero walks to put runners on 1st and third with one out.
Hendricks puts down a safety squeeze and the run scores tying the game at 1-1, as Garcia hesitated then threw the ball away past first base, allowing both runners to advance to 2nd and 3rd.
Addison Russell put down another squeeze bunt, scoring the runner from third to make it 2-1 Cubs. Dexter Fowler hit a ground ball to Jhonny Peralta but he couldn’t handle it and Fowler reached first safely and another run scored making it 3-1 Cubs.
Jorge Soler came up and launched a two run bomb to extend the Cubs lead to 5-1.
In the top of the third, the Cubs added their sixth run when Rizzo walked and scored on a ground out to second by Montero.
The Cardinals finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth with a long home run off the bat of Wong pulling the Cardinals within 6-2, then Randal Grichuk, pinching hitting for relief pitcher Carlos Villanueva, hit his own bomb to left field making it 6-3 Cubs.
Both bullpens took over and didn’t allow a run for the rest of the game and Cubs closer Carlos Rondon entered in the bottom of the ninth and worked around a one-out single to retire the Cardinals and secure the 6-3 victory.
Game three of the five game series will be played on Monday in Chicago with time to be announced.
