American League West/ Wild Card Still Up For Grabs
As the final weekend of regular season play in Major League Baseball begins, the American League West Division is still a race to the end with the division crown and second wild card spot still up for grabs.
With the loss of the LA Angels to the Oakland A’s on Wednesday night and the Houston Astros’ victory over the Seattle Mariners, the Astros are now just a half a game up over the Angels for the second wild card spot with just four games left. The Texas Rangers are still in first place over the Astros by two and a half games and three games over the Angels. This weekend’s three game series between the Angels and Rangers is definitely an important one as the magic number for Texas is just 2. The Minnesota Twins are also in the mix for the second wild card spot, although a little farther back than the Astros and Angels, but just one and a half games behind.
The first wild card spot currently belongs to the New York Yankees who are up by two and a half games but have lost three straight to the Boston Red Sox as they struggle to earn the franchise’s 10,000th win.
This weekend’s matchups for the teams involved in this playoff hunt are as follows:
Friday 10/2:
LA Angels-Weaver vs. Texas Rangers-Perez
Houston Astros– Keuchel vs. Arizona Diamondbacks-De La Rosa
