The Los Angeles Dodgers were two series victories away from a return to the World Series in 2022, but were shocked by the surging San Diego Padres.

The expectations for the 2023 season, was that the Dodgers would be looking up at the Padres, as San Diego was expected to have a dominating season, but the latter has not happened. Instead the Dodgers are where they were not expected to be, battling for the division lead.

The Dodgers were 16-13 at the end of April, tied for first with the Arizona Diamondbacks.  After May ended, the Dodgers were in the lead at 34-23, just a half game up on the DBacks, with the Padres eight games back in fourth place. Still within striking distance, the Dodgers ended June at 46-35 and in second place in the division, just two games back of Arizona, but they made a quick turnaround right before the break, as they finished tied with Arizona for the division lead.

A strong second half is key to another postseason run for the Dodgers, and with LA visiting Queens on Friday, they entered a four game hitting streak and looked to continue their winning ways and keep the pressure on Arizona.

The Dodgers sent Julio Urias to the mound against Justin Verlander, and the young lefty outpitched the veteran Mets righty.

The game was a pitching duel through the first four innings, as both clubs failed to take advantage and take an early lead. But the Dodgers finally broke through in the top of the fifth with three runs on a Mookie Betts RBI single to score the first run of the game, and Freddie Freeman‘s two RBI double to push the Dodgers up 3-0.

The Mets only managed a first inning lead-off double off the bat of Brandon Nimmo, and were shut down the rest of the game, while the Dodgers added a run each in the sixth, eighth and ninth to pull away to a 6-0 victory.

Urias tossed six shutout innings, allowing one hit, a walk and struck out seven batters.  The bullpen combined for three hitless innings, while not allowing a walk, and struck out three batters.

The Dodgers improved to 52-38, winning their fifth straight and moving a game ahead of the DBacks in the NL West.
