Florida State League Player of The Week: RF Wuilmer Becerra – Mets

Awarded for week – April 10-16

On July 3, 2011, the Toronto Blue Jays signed Wuilmer Becerra as a non-drafted free agent. On December 12, 2012, Becerra was included in a trade to the New York Mets along with pitcher Noah Syndergaard, and catchers Travis d’Arnaud and John Buck for pitcher R.A. Dickey and catchers Josh Thole and Mike Nickeas.

Since the trade, Buck was traded away and d’Arnaud and Syndergaard have become staples in the Mets big league roster.

As for Becerra, he has made a name for himself while playing within the Mets farm system.

In 2014, with the Mets rookie affiliate the Kingsport Mets, Becerra batted .300 (62 for 207), with 37 runs, 10 doubles, two triples, seven home runs and 29 RBIs.

In 2015, he was promoted to the Class-A Full Season Savannah Sand Gnats, and batted .290 (130 for 449), with 67 runs, 27 doubles, three triples, nine home runs and 63 RBIs.

Last season, with the Class-A Advanced St. Lucie Mets, he was limited to just 65 games, due to season-ending surgery to his right shoulder to repair a partially torn labrum.

Prior to the injury, the Caracas, Venezuela native batted .312 (77 for 247) with 27 runs scored, 17 doubles, a home run, and 34 RBIs.

This past spring he was invited to his first big league camp, and was able to showcase his skills in front of all the Mets fans.

So far this season with the St. Lucie Mets, Becerra has started the season on a tear, batting .378 (14 for 37), with seven runs scored, three doubles, and five RBIs in 10 games.

Over the past week, from April 10-16, he batted .400 (10 for 25), with four runs, three doubles, four RBIs and a walk. He also had an eight game hitting streaked snapped on April 14th, and has hit safely in nine of his first 10 games of the season.

The 22-year old is starting to peak at the right time of his minor league career, as #11 on the Mets Top Prospect list and #3 Top Outfielder in the organization, his future is bright as he continues to climb up the ladder towards the major leagues.

Congrats to Wuilmer Becerra for winning Legends on Deck’s, Florida State League Player of the Week for April 10-April 16.
