Home Run Watch In NY, Now Belongs To Mets Pete Alonso

Pete Alonso hit his 10th home run in the New York Mets 21st game on Friday night in San Francisco.

In 2022, New York Yankees Aaron Judge stole the newspaper back pages in the city with every home run he hit, on his way to a record 62, most ever as a Yankee in the regular season.

The Mets went out in the offseason and bolstered their pitching staff but what has stolen the show early on has been Alonso and his scorching red hot bat.

In his rookie season of 2019, Alonso hit 53 home runs, smashing the previous team record of 41 held by Carlos Beltran and Todd Hundley. If MLB would have played a full season in 2020, Alonso may have hit at least 50, but he settled for 16 in 57 games played.

In 2021, the Mets first baseman had an off season for his standard and hit 37 home runs, but turned it around in 2022 and hit 40 in 161 games.

But the 2023 season seems like a different one and possibly a record breaking one, as Alonso has come running out of the gate, blasting the ball all over the park and over the fence.

Opening Day was on March 30 and Alonso went hitless, but the next day he launched his first home run on the season. Then after a four game drought, he hit two on April 5th against the Milwaukee Brewers and one each in the next two games. Since then he has homered five times in the last 12 games, for a total of 10 in the month.

In Aaron Judge‘s record breaking season, he hit six home runs in April and then took off into the double digit world. If Alonso can keep up this pace through June and beyond, he may just have a chance to surpass his team leading single season home run record and go after Judge’s New York City record of 62.
