Is Anthony Volpe The Next Star For The New York Yankees?
I had the chance to see Anthony Volpe in person today playing for the Tampa Tarpons against the Jupiter Hammerheads on the 4th of July weekend a part of their doubleheader series. Anthony Volpe is currently the Yankees 11th best prospect in the organization, led by Jasson Dominguez. Volpe is a part of a Tarpons team with massive offensive production game-in and game-out. The Tarpons have 384 runs on the year and Anthony Volpe has brought in 45 of those runs from the lead-off position.
June proved to be quite the month for Volpe as he increased his value by winning Southeast League Player of the Month. In June, Volpe led the league with a (.392) batting average, with a (1.363) OPS. Add seven (7) homeruns, nine (9) doubles and three (3) triples to his name as well in the month of June. Volpe also sported a 15 game hitting streak during the month.
Volpe heard his name called in the first round with pick thirty (30) back in 2019. A 20-year-old shortstop from Morristown, New Jersey. A right-handed power-hitting shortstop with plenty of contact and speed.
So far this year Volpe has a (.313) average with an OBS of (.455). Through the year he has 47 runs and 45 RBI’s from the lead-off position. Extra base hits have not been an issue either, with 18 doubles and 4 triples on the year. Even with that power, he still has a lot of speed to offer. On the year he has 20 stolen bases as well.
As mentioned, I had the chance to see Volpe in person on July,4th 2021. There are just some things that the stats don’t tell you and I will mention them now.
Defense is one of those attributes that you have to see in person to really understand. Throughout today’s game, Volpe was tested on some throws. In the 2nd inning, Volpe showed quickness and agility to easily convert a double play. In the 3rd inning, Volpe showed his defense again by making a cross-body throw while in the shift to get the long out at first.
Volpe’s offensive production was also on form today as well. He has an aggressiveness to the plate that the stats just don’t tell you. To lead off the game Volpe swung on the first pitch which ultimately led to an out but showed that Volpe is ready to swing whenever a strike is thrown. Above all. that aggressiveness would slow down during his next at-bat as he showed his discipline at the plate. A nine-pitch at-bat that ended up being a strikeout at the end of the day, but still showed great vision.
We’ll see how Anthony Volpe develops during his minor league career, but as of now, he is on the path of legends. Playing for Low-A in 2021, with an ETA of 2023. The awards are starting to line up for Volpe as his professional career continues. The Yankees organization will be keeping a close eye out for their emerging star.
