Japan Opens Premier 12 Tourney With 5-0 Win Over South Korea
The International Championships are underway.
The WBSC Premier 12 tournament is under way in Tokyo with the first game played between Japan and South Korea on Sunday.
The host country Japan, who are also ranked number one in the field of 12, jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second inning, then added single runs in the fifth, sixth and eighth to pull away with a 5-0 victory over South Korea and get the tournament rolling.
Japan’s Otani Shohei earned the victory by tossing six shutout innings, allowing just two hits, two walks, while striking out 10. Shortstop Hayato Sakanoto, was 1 for 5, with a home run, and two RBI’s, and outfielder Ryosuke Hirata, was 2 for 4, with two RBI’s.
On Wednesday both teams will be at it again with Japan against Mexico and South Korea facing the Dominican Republic.
