Jordan Walker’s Journey Back: From Offensive Struggles to MLB Stardom
During the 2020 season, which was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Jordan Walker was selected in the first round (21st overall) of the MLB Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals out of Decatur High School in Stone Mountain, Georgia.
Prior to his big league debut in 2023, Walker was putting up big numbers throughout the minor leagues, knocking on the door for his opportunity to reach the majors.
That opportunity finally came when he broke camp with the Cardinals to begin the 2023 season. In his first MLB game, Walker went 1-for-5 with an RBI. He followed that by putting together a 12-game hitting streak to begin his major league career. Then, in June, he finished the month with another impressive 17-game hitting streak. The Jordan Walker phenomenon was very much alive in St. Louis. He finished his rookie season with 19 doubles, two triples, 16 home runs, and 51 RBIs in 117 games.
Walker’s 2024 season was not nearly as successful as his rookie campaign. He appeared in just 51 games and batted only .201, collecting 10 doubles, one triple, five home runs, and 20 RBIs. Walker was unable to build on his 2023 success, as reports indicated he struggled with his swing mechanics, leading to his offensive woes.

In 2025, Walker once again broke camp with the Cardinals looking for a bounce-back season. He appeared in 60 more games than he did in 2024, but the results were largely the same. He struggled to hit above .215 and managed only a slight improvement with 13 doubles, one triple, six home runs, and 41 RBIs. He also dealt with left wrist inflammation that landed him on the injured list in May. All of it limited Walker from having the breakout season many expected after his promising rookie year.
The 2026 season, however, will go down as the breakout campaign Walker had been waiting for, as he has emerged as one of the elite sluggers in the game. In April, he put together a 15-game hitting streak while blasting six home runs during that stretch. Even more impressive, he homered in three consecutive games on two separate occasions during the streak. Over the months of April and May combined, Walker slugged 14 home runs and drove in 40 runs.
His home run pace slowed slightly in June with three long balls, but he continued to hit for average, keeping it above .280. Then, prior to the All-Star break, Walker caught fire again in July, batting .341 while recording hits in 12 of his 13 games, along with four home runs and 16 RBIs. That outstanding first half earned him a trip to the 2026 Home Run Derby during All-Star Weekend.
In the Derby, Walker reached the championship round and found himself trailing Kyle Schwarber by three home runs. With his final swings, he caught fire, launching one home run after another to complete an incredible comeback and capture the Home Run Derby crown. It was the perfect ending to an amazing first half that also included his first All-Star selection.
Now, with the second half set to begin on Friday, Walker will look to keep the Cardinals in postseason contention as they sit just one game out of the final National League Wild Card spot. The division lead is still within reach, and a strong winning streak could quickly change the outlook. More importantly, Walker has returned to the dynamic player everyone believed he could become, adding to what has already been a remarkable comeback and breakout season.
We look forward to seeing what Jordan Walker can accomplish during the second half of what has already been a memorable 2026 season.
