Kansas City Royals Are Red-Hot And Have Eyes On First Place

On July 10th, a day before the MLB All Star Game, the Kansas City Royals were 44-43, in third place and three games out of the AL Central lead. A second half surge is all they would need to get back to playing for a postseason berth.

Well since the second half started the Royals are 9-4, and on July 21st, they over second place amidst their eight straight winning streak.  But even with all that winning, they only gained a game on the 1st Place Cleveland Indians, who have a seven game winning streak of their own.

In 2015, the Royals won the World Series over the New York Mets and in 2016 they came back down to earth finishing the season at .500 (81-81). This season didn’t look promising early on as they were mired in last place at the end of April and May. But since they are 31-17 and now find themselves in the heart of a playoff run again.

Lately, as was there motto in the past, they have done it with timely hits and power.  Over their last seven games, six of their everyday players are batting over .300, and have combined for 14 home runs and 41 RBIs.  Leading the charge over the past week are Jorge Bonifacio (.409, 9 for 22, 7 R, 3 HR, 4 RBI), Eric Hosmer (.375, 9 for 24, 7 R, 2 HR, 8 RBI), Whit Merrifield (.346, 9 for 26, 5 R, Double, 3 HR, 8 RBI) and Mike Moustakas (.333, 8 for 24, 6 Rm 4 HR, 7 RBI).

The Royals have also gotten great help out of their pen as 11 pitchers have combined for 22.1 innings of shutout ball, helping the team to their sudden surge.

Second half baseball is always a great opportunity for a team to make a run and see what happens. And with a little more than two months of baseball left this season, the Royals can be that team to make it interesting in 2017.

The race is tightening up in the AL Central and it’s anyone’s guess who may take the title.

One thing is for certain, if things remain the same on August 18th, as they are now, the three game series against the Indians in Cleveland will be a great battle for 1st Place.

Baseball, like it oughta be played.
