Late Night With The Fort Myers Miracle

Miracles-stadium2

We’re gonna cause talk and suspicion
We’re gonna give an exhibition
We’re gonna find out what it is all about
After midnight, we’re gonna let it all hang out – J.J. Cale, “After Midnight”

Live from CenturyLink Sports Complex, it’s Late Night with the Miracle.

The 2015 Fort Myers Miracle have played after midnight a number of times this season.

The Miracle, Class A Florida State League affiliate of the Minnesota Twins have been involved in  21 extra inning contests, which leads everyone in baseball this year. Thirteen professional teams, from the major leagues through Class A have played in at least 15 extra inning games thus far, and no other team has played in more than 17. The Cedar Rapids Kernels, Minnesota’s other Class A team has played in 16.

On the other end of the spectrum, the Erie Seawolves, Detroit’s Class AA team, and the Carolina Mudcats, a class A affiliate of the Braves have each played in only one extra inning game.

Fort Myers surpassed their previous franchise record of 17, set in 1992 and repeated again in 2003 on June 24th, the last day of the FSL’s first half, an 11 inning win over the Palm Beach Cardinals.

The Miracle came right out of the gate with an 11 inning victory over the Charlotte Stone Crabs in their third game of the season.

On April 15th and 16th, back to back extra inning losses to the Tampa Yankees paved the way to a total of 8 in April including a marathon 17 inning loss at St. Lucie against the Mets.

May had the Miracle playing in 5 extra inning games, followed by 6 in June and thus far 2 in July.

Recently released righthanded pitcher Madison Boer figured in the decision in four of the extra inning games in April and May.

The second game of Fort Myers’ second half saw the Miracle win a 5-4 decision over the Charlotte Stone Crabs in 15 innings.

On July 21st, the Jupiter Hammerheads went down to defeat at the tired hands of the Miracle in 16 innings. Yes, Fort Myers has played 17, 16 and 15 inning games in 2015. The franchise record is a 20 inning game in 2006.

Based on how this season is going, all professional baseball extra inning records are in jeopardy at the hands of Miracle manager Jeff Smith’s club.
