Legends On Deck’s Top 25 Prospects: No.’s 13-8
Just two more days til we unveil our #1 prospect.
10. Jon Gray, RHP
Third time was a charm for Gray, as he signed with the Rockies after they made him the third overall pick in 2013. He had previous been drafted out of High School in 2010 by the Royals (10th round) and by the Yankees (10th round) in 2011 out of Junior College. In his first full season as a pro in 2014, Gray pitched 124.1 innings at Double-A Tulsa. He managed a 3.91 ERA over that span, with 113 strikeouts and 41 walks. He allowed 107 hits as well.
The Oklahoma product has a durable, strong pitchers build and a sound delivery that pumps out a plus fastball that can touch triple digits with good sink. He can follow that up with a nasty slider that misses bats with regularity and also grades as plus. His changeup lags behind his other offerings but shows promise when he gets it right. He also throws a curveball that is more of a show-me pitch to keep hitters off balance.
Outlook: Gray profiles as an excellent number two starter at the highest level. However he will be faced with the prospect of making half his starts in Colorado which can drag down any pitchers numbers.
Risk: Low. Pitched well in Double-A. Needs to build innings.
