There are a number of traditional paths to the professional baseball. Most players get drafted out of high school or college and then begin developing through an MLB farm system. But, once in a great while, you’ll hear a story about player who goes undrafted, but gets signed. But when’s the last time you heard about a player who played club baseball through college, yet manages to sign a professional contract?
Meet Jackson Hicks, pitcher in the Minnesota Twins system. After playing high school baseball in North Carolina, Jackson enrolled at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill. He joined the UNC club baseball team and pitched for four years, while pursuing his degree. In 2021, Jackson signed with the independent, United Shore Professional Baseball League (USPBL) and played with the Westside Wooly Mammoths. After just 33.1 innings of work, he got the call from the Minnesota Twins.
Jackson pitched with the FCL Twins the remainder of the 2021 season and with the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels in 2022. He’s currently at Twins camp in Fort Myers, training for the 2023 season. Brian and David connected with Jackson to chat about his incredibly unique journey to professional baseball.
