On a day when the New York Mets waived the white flag on the 2023 season, they lose an embarrassing game on a walk-off balk to the Kansas City Royals.

Well it just can’t get any worse for the 2023 Mets, or can it?

After closer Edwin Diaz went down with a leg injury in the World Baseball Classic, the team never truly recovered and it showed on the diamond.

On August 1, 2023, which also happens to be the trading deadline, the Mets stood 50-55 entering into a three game set with the Kansas City Royals who were 33-75 and last in the AL Central.

After trading away Justin Verlander and finally Tommy Pham, the Mets went after the game as if they had something to prove, but once again it was the bullpen that let down the team.

The scoring started with Pete Alonso‘s 31st home run of the season to put the Mets up 1-0 in the second. Jose Quintana, who was making just his third start of the season, kept the Royals off the scoreboard for the first four innings, before they scored a run in the bottom of the fifth on a sac fly off the bat of Maikel Garcia.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Royals scored two runs to take a 3-1 lead on a throwing error from catcher Francisco Alvarez and an RBI single from Garcia. The Mets retook the lead in the top of the eighth on an RBI single from Alonso, a bases loaded walk to Brett Baty and a sac fly off the bat of Mark Vientos.

The Royals answered right back in the bottom of the frame on a sac fly this time off the bat of Freddy Fermin to tie the game at 4-4.

The game went into extra innings and New York added two big runs on a two-run home run from rookie phenom Alvarez.

With a 6-4 lead, the Mets sent reliever Brooks Raley to the mound in the bottom of the 10th and with a runner on second, Bobby Witt Jr doubled to center field driving in the 5th run for the Royals. Next batter MJ Melendez hit an RBI single to center to tie the game at 6-6. Raley then induced a pop out off the bat of Salvador Perez and after the Mets brought in Grant Hartwig, he struck out Freddy Fermin to record the second out.

After Dairon Blanco reached on a throwing error by Baty, Hartwig walked Drew Waters to load the bases. Another Mets pitching change brought in rookie Josh Walker and before he could even throw a pitch, he was called for a balk allowing the winning run to score from third base. Truly the most embarrassing and worse way to lose a game this season by the Mets.

The Mets will trey again on Wednesday as they send one of the only bright spots left in their rotation, Kodai Senga to the mound against Cole Ragans. First pitch set for 8:10 PM.
