MLB Rookies on Deck: Astros Phenom Jeremy Pena – SS
Jeremy Pena was drafted by the Houston Astros in the 3rd round of the 2018 Amateur Draft. The Dominican Republic native starred at Classical High School in Rhode Island before moving on to play college baseball at the University of Maine. He starred in three seasons before making the jump to the minors.
In 2018, he was assigned to the Tri-City ValleyCats (Rookie) and in 36 games, he batted .250 with one home run and 10 RBI’s. In 2019, he split time between Class A Full and Advanced and batted a combined .303, with 73 runs, 21 doubles, seven triples, seven home runs, 54 RBIs in 409 at bats.
With the 2020 minor league season shut down to the pandemic, the son of Geronimo Pena, took his talents back home to the Dominican Republic and played with the Estrellas de Oriente in the Dominican Winter League and batted .306 in 30 games.
In 2021, Pena was assigned to the Sugar Land Skeeters (AAA) of the Pacific Coast League, but was placed on the 60-Day DL and was not activated to play again until August 16th, 2021. In 30 games in AAA he batted .287, with 10 home runs and 19 RBI’s in 122 at bats.
This past spring training, Pena batted .350 with two home runs and nine RBI’s in eight games, and earned the starting SS spot on the major league club, making his debut on April 7, 2022.
In his first MLB game, he went 0-4, with two strikeouts, but the young Phenom left the drama for game two of the season, going 3 for 5 and hit his first major league Home Run with his parents in attendance while conducting a live TV interview during his at bat. What an excitement for Jeremy and his parents.
Jeremy’s father, Geronimo Pena, played seven seasons in the Majors from 1990 to 1996, mostly with the St. Louis Cardinals.
