The Philadelphia Phillies Cole Hamels tossed a no-hitter against the Chicago Cubs in a complete game, 13 strikeout gem.
“Nothing will top winning a World Series, but this is right under it,” Hamels tells MLB.com.
With the Friday’s non-waiver Trade Deadline approaching, and teams looking for extra help in their playoff pursuit, Hamel’s could be suiting up for a new team before his next start.
In the top of the third, the Phillies scored three runs highlighted by a three-out home run from Ryan Howard.
By this point Hamels retired five straight batters and in the bottom of the third his dominance continued as he struck out three batters to keep the Cubs hitless.
Hamels retired 16 straight batters until a two-out walk to Dexter Fowler in the sixth. But he struck out the side getting Kris Bryant on a 91 MPH cutter to end the inning.
In the seventh, he continued his brilliant performance striking out the side again on getting Chris Denorfia on three pitches.
In the top of the eighth, the Phillies added two more runs on an RBI double off the bat of Freddy Galvis scoring Cody Asche, then Galvis scored on a throwing error by first baseman Anthony Rizzo.
In the bottom of the eighth, he retired the first two batters on flies balls, and got rookie catcher Kyle Schwarber on a sharp ground ball back to the mound.
Hamels ended the game retiring 10 straight batters, finishing with a complete game shutout, facing two over the minimum, with 13 strikeouts using 129 pitches.
