Prospects on Deck: OF Mike Yastrzemski – Orioles

The grandson of Boston Red Sox Hall of famer Carl Yastrzemski, is raking in his first 10 Triple-A games after being promoted on May 16th, from Double-A.
Mike Yastrzemski, 25, was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 14th round of the 2013 June Amateur draft out of Vanderbilt University.
In his first year in pro ball, he batted .273, with 13 doubles, four triples, three home runs, 25 RBI’s and 24 walks in 57 games with the Aberdeen IronBirds (Rookie).
In 2014, he split time between Class-A and Double-A and combined he batted .288, with 34 doubles, 16 triples, 14 home runs, 75 RBIs, and 41 walks in 129 games.
Last season, the Massachusetts native, spent the entire year with Double-A Bowie Baysox, leading the team in games (128), walks (43), and tied for the team lead in triples with six.
For the year, he batted .246, with 63 runs scored, 30 doubles, six triples, six home runs, 59 RBI’s, and 43 walks.
Yastrzemski, who swings from the left side of the plate just like his grandfather did, started out 2016 in Double-A where he batted .268 with 10 doubles, eight home runs and 34 RBI’s.
On May 16th, Yastrzemski was promoted to the Norfolk Tides and so far has hit safely in eight of his first 10 games. He is currently on a five game hitting streak with four multi-hit games in that span.
After Wednesday’s early afternoon game, the Orioles #19 prospect is batting .405, with nine runs, five doubles, a triple, two home runs, seven RBI’s and five walks in 10 Triple-A games.
The outfielder is showcasing his talents at the highest level of Baltimore’s farm system and proving the organization was correct to give him the promotion.
A strong showing the rest of the season and the younger Yastrzemski may find himself following his grandfather’s footsteps to the majors.
