Prospects on Deck: LHP – Oddanier Mosqueda – Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox signed international free agent Oddanier Mosqueda to a minor league contract on July 2, 2015 out of Caracas, Venezuela.
In his first pro season in 2016 with the Dominican Summer League team, Mosqueda was 2-2, with a 2.36 ERA, 54 strikeouts in 42 innings through 16 games in relief.
After coming over to the states in 2017, he had a very good start in his first game as he tossed four shutout innings, allowing four hits, two walks and struck out three. But the rest of the season, he worked through some struggles on the mound but all of which were growing pains to better days.
Those better days would come the following season in 2018 with the Lowell Spinners (Short A Season), as he finished 3-1, with a 2.84 ERA through 17 relief appearances, with 40 strikeouts in 31.2 innings pitched as opponents batted just .171 against him.
Boston promoted Mosqueda to Full Season A ball with the Greenville Drive in 2019, and in 27 games in relief, he finished 2-2, with a 3.29 ERA and 69 strikeouts in 52 innings.
The Venezuelan native continued his growth in the system as he appeared in 32 games in 2021 with Greenville, who after the Minor League realignment of the teams, became the organizations High A ball club. That season Mosqueda was 2-1, with a 3.61 ERA, three saves and 66 strikeouts in 47.1 innings.
The lefty pitcher upped his appearances out of the pen with 45 games with Double A Portland Sea Dogs in 2022, and was 5-3, with a 4.30 ERA, while recording 76 strikeouts in 58.2 innings.
Mosqueda appeared in one spring training game in 2022, and struck out three batters in one inning of work. So far this spring, he has tossed four innings out of the pen, spanning three games, has allowed one run on five hits and has four strikeouts in four innings.
The scouting report on the Venezuelan lefty is that he has a 90-92 MPH fastball that tops out at 94 MPH, a 78-80 MPH curveball and a 83-84 MPH Changeup and has shown bat-missing ability.
There is a chance that Mosqueda makes his MLB debut in 2023 as he can provide depth in the Boston bullpen.
Keep an eye out for Mosqueda as he continues his journey to reaching his dream of making his MLB debut and becoming a mainstay in the big league bullpen.
