The Boston Red Sox and the Pittsburgh Pirates made a trade on Thursday, as the Red Sox sent Jhostnxon Garcia and Jesus Travieso  to the Bucs and Pittsburgh sent MLB RHP Johan Oviedo along with prospects Adonys Guzman and Tyler Samaniego to Boston.

Red Sox Receive

Johan Oviedo – RHP
Oviedo made his MLB debut in August 2020 with the St. Louis Cardinals, starting five games and posting an 0–3 record with a 5.47 ERA. He remained in the rotation in 2021, making 13 starts and going 0–5 with a 4.91 ERA. The Cardinals shifted him to the bullpen in 2022, where he appeared in 14 games, registering a 2–1 record and a 3.21 ERA.

In August 2022, Oviedo was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates in the deal for José Quintana and Chris Stratton. Returning to a starting role, he finished that season with seven starts, going 2–2 with a 3.23 ERA.
In 2023, he became a full-time starter, appearing in 32 games, winning nine, and posting a 4.31 ERA.

Oviedo underwent Tommy John surgery after the 2023 season and missed all of 2024. After returning in 2025, he suffered a lat strain during spring training and did not take the mound until August. This past season, he made nine starts, finishing 2–1 with a 3.57 ERA.

Adonys Guzman – C
Guzman was selected by the Pirates in the 5th round of the 2025 MLB Draft out of the University of Arizona. He made his professional debut this past summer with the Bradenton Marauders, appearing in one game and going 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs.

The Bronx-born catcher played three collegiate seasons at Arizona, batting .294/.396/.409 with an .805 OPS, 10 home runs, and 68 RBIs.

Tyler Samaniego – LHP
Samaniego, a left-hander from Huntsville, Alabama, was drafted by the Pirates in the 15th round of the 2021 MLB Draft out of the University of South Alabama.
Across five seasons in the Pirates’ system (2021–2025), Samaniego compiled a 10–8 record with a 3.82 ERA, appearing in 127 games (two starts) and recording 24 saves over 158 innings.

Pirates Receive

Jhostynxon Garcia – OF
MLB Pipeline Top 100 Prospect (#85)
Pirates Prospect Rank: #6 overall, #3 among outfielders

Garcia, ranked No. 85 among MLB’s Top 100 prospects, originally signed with the Boston Red Sox as an international free agent in July 2019. After progressing steadily through the Red Sox system, he broke out in 2024, hitting .286 with 24 doubles, five triples, 23 home runs, and 66 RBIs across Low-A, High-A, and Double-A.

In 2025, Garcia opened the season in Double-A and appeared in 33 games before being promoted to Triple-A on May 20. He homered in his first game at the new level and continued to surge, finishing his Triple-A season on September 21 with 12 doubles, 18 home runs, and 58 RBIs, production that earned him his first major league call-up. He appeared in five MLB games in August, recording a double in seven at-bats.

Now with Pittsburgh, Garcia enters the organization as one of its top young talents.

Jesus Travieso – RHP
Travieso signed an international contract with the Red Sox in 2024 and debuted in the Dominican Summer League, appearing in 11 games and posting an 0–3 record with a 3.80 ERA.

In 2025, he advanced to the Florida Complex League, where he made 10 starts (12 total appearances) and went 1–3 with a 2.77 ERA. The Red Sox then promoted him to Low-A, where he finished the season 2–0 with a 3.51 ERA across six starts (seven appearances).
