Rasmussen Delivers as Rays Move One Win From the World Series

The Tampa Bay Rays are one victory away from the World Series after defeating the Cleveland Guardians 3–1 on Sunday at Progressive Field.

Drew Rasmussen delivered seven strong innings, helping Tampa Bay take a 3–2 lead in the American League Championship Series and putting Cleveland’s season on the line.

For the Rays, the victory completed a significant turnaround during their stay in Cleveland. After dropping Game 3 and falling behind in the series, Tampa Bay responded with consecutive wins. Saturday’s offensive breakthrough evened the matchup, and Sunday’s pitching performance gave the Rays the opportunity to return home with a chance to claim the pennant.

Tampa Bay wasted little time making Cleveland starter Parker Messick work. The rookie left-hander faced immediate pressure, as Jonny DeLuca drew a bases-loaded walk in the first inning to force home the opening run. It was an early reminder that postseason offense does not always require a ball driven into the seats. Patience can be just as valuable.

That early advantage gave Rasmussen room to settle into his assignment. With the series effectively reduced to a best-of-three entering Sunday, every inning carried additional weight. Rasmussen answered the moment by keeping Cleveland from putting together the kind of sustained attack that could change the direction of the game.

His seven innings also carried value beyond the scoreboard. With the remaining games scheduled on consecutive days following the earlier rainout, getting length from the starting pitcher helped Tampa Bay limit its bullpen workload. In October, protecting available arms can influence the next game almost as much as the current one.

Cleveland finally pushed across its lone run in the sixth inning. Steven Kwan and José Ramírez singled, giving the Guardians an opportunity to generate momentum. Chase DeLauter followed with a groundout that brought Kwan home, but Cleveland could not turn that opening into a larger rally.

That missed opportunity reflected the challenge facing the Guardians throughout the evening. Against a pitcher working deep into the game, their chances to close the gap were limited. Cleveland needed another timely hit, another productive plate appearance, or one swing capable of changing the score. The breakthrough never arrived.

Bryan Baker finished the victory and collected his fifth save of the postseason. Rasmussen earned the win, while Messick took the loss. Tampa Bay’s pitching staff ultimately made three runs enough, delivering a different formula from the offensive production that powered Saturday’s victory.

Now the pressure shifts entirely to Cleveland. The Guardians must win Game 6 at Tropicana Field on Monday to force a deciding seventh game. There is no longer room for an unsuccessful night at the plate or an early deficit that proves too difficult to overcome.

For Tampa Bay, the assignment is simpler, though hardly easy. One more complete performance would finish the series and send the Rays to the World Series. After arriving in Cleveland needing answers, they leave with control of the matchup, a confident pitching staff, and the opportunity to celebrate an American League championship in front of their home fans.
