As all Red Sox fans know, they missed out on a pretty important left handed starting pitcher this off season. However, he is now wearing Cub blue and Boston needs to move on. After the fire sale that happened on July 31, the Red Sox retooled their farm system with many impressive prospects. For Eduardo Rodriguez, a change of scenery was potentially all that he needed. The 21-year-old left hander was acquired by the Red Sox in the deal that sent Andrew Miller to Baltimore. In Baltimore, Rodriguez seemed to be in limbo at the Double A level. However, Boston seems to be extremely high on the Venezuelan starting pitcher.
Rodriguez opened up about his struggles in Baltimore while in Fort Myers a few days back, “When I was with the Orioles, I didn’t think they were going to call me to Triple A. I thought they would keep me in Double A with Bowie.”
Apparently, Rodriguez likes the snow here in Boston. Since joining the organization, Rodriguez played in Double A, until Pawtucket called him up to start in one of their playoffs games, effectively ending his season with the Sea Dogs. In Double A, he went 3-1 with a 0.96 ERA, 39 strikeouts and eight walks in just 37 1/3 innings. In the past, Rodriguez’s work ethic and passion for the game has come under question. Apparently, there isn’t any one problem with that here. His fastball sits at 92-94 MPH, where it has shown flashes of upwards of 97 MPH. He also features an above average change up and is developing a slider.
Along with Matt Barnes and Steven Wright, Eduardo Rodriguez expects to start the season in Triple A. However, if they need a spot-start or someone to come in for an injured starter, Rodriguez looks to be one of the pitchers to be called up to Boston. With his elusiveness to the injury bug and help from a stellar Red Sox pitching staff, Eduardo Rodriguez looks to be shaping up to be a top-of-the-rotation starter for the Boston Red Sox.
