Sonny Gray Named A’s Opening Day Starter

For the third consecutive season, Oakland Athletics’ ace Sonny Gray will start their Opening Day game against the Chicago White Sox on April 4, 2016.

According to, A’s Manager Bob Melvin announced that the right-hander had secured the Opening Day job after he had made his 2016 Spring Debut on Wednesday afternoon, also against the White Sox.

Gray pitched three innings in his first start this season, allowing four hits and one run; striking out four batters. The A’s offense supported their starter’s outing by getting off nineteen hits against Chicago in the 12-3 victory.

Although it hasn’t been officially announced, it’s speculated that the Chicago White Sox will start their ace in Chris Sale on Opening Day.

The twenty-six-year-old went 14-7 in 2015 with a 2.73 ERA in thirty-one starts. In his three major league seasons he has a career record of 33-20 and a 2.88 ERA in seventy-four starts.
