Who To Watch: 10 Players, 10 Teams To Track In The 2024 FSL Season

The 2024 Florida State League season is upon us, and there are some impressionable names amongst us this season.

Just looking at the numbers, there are five MLB Top 100 players, featuring three that are the #1 prospects in their respective systems (OF Max Clark, DET; RHP Noble Meyer, MIA; Walker Jenkins, MIN).

The rosters have been released, and with the season underway, let’s look at each team’s top prospect who will be stepping onto an FSL field in 2024.

East

Daytona Tortugas (Cincinatti Reds): SS/3B Ricardo Cabrera (#9 CIN)

Beginning with the East Division’s Daytona Tortugas, Ricardo Cabrera comes into the season as the highest-ranked prospect on the Tortugas roster.

Cabrera, a 2022 top international prospect, shows great plate discipline at the dish and solid contact.

Cabrera isn’t a power bat, but he is a plus fielder, with that side of his game being his biggest attribute.

Cabrera is a solid fielder and hitter, but he has room to grow and should continue to develop his offensive game as he gets more ABs.

Jupiter Hammerheads (Miami Marlins): RHP Noble Meyer (#1 MIA, #57 MLB)

One of the few players on the list that is up in the air about starting the Florida State League, Noble Meyer, is a no-brainer for players to watch if we see him begin in Jupiter.

A top-10 First Round selection by the Marlins last season, Meyer features a three-pitch repertoire with command for his breaking ball pitches.

Compared to Floyd, Meyer doesn’t display the same velocity on his pitches. However, he does place his pitches well.

Meyer has the makings to be someone who could run through 5–6 innings of work, which makes him someone with the potential to be a lengthy starter in the Hammerheads and hopefully the Marlins rotation.

St. Lucie Mets (New York Mets): SS Colin Houck (#7 NYM)

Many of the Mets top prospects in the system are farther into their journey towards Queens. However, Houck is jumping into season one of Blue & Orange.

Houck’s major skill is his fielding.

The former Georgia high schooler shows off impressive arm strength and fluid defensive play in the middle of the infield. His transitional throws from short to first are impressive, and he has the potential to be one of the better fielders in baseball.

Offensively, Houck has solid bat speed and contact on the ball. While his offensive play can be improved, there is a good foundation for the 19-year-old.

Compared to the first two prospect pitchers, Houck’s journey to the Majors may take more growth, but the pieces are there for him to be a solid player for both St. Lucie and New York.

Palm Beach Cardinals (St. Louis Cardinals): OF Chase Davis (#5 STL)

Chase Davis is back in Palm Beach for a full season this year, following his debut after being drafted 21st in the first round in 2023.

Davis has impressive home run power and is more of a home run or strikeout type of player.

However, Davis’s strong suit at the moment is his fielding and his work in the outfield.

He shows above-average arm strength and is reliable in the outfield.

Davis’s power bat could be his biggest part of his game; however, there is room for growth.

David, though, should still be a quick mover in the lower levels of the minors as he approaches St. Louis.

West

Bradenton Marauders (Pittsburgh Pirates): LHP Michael Kennedy (#15 PIT)

The Pittsburgh Pirates Single-A affiliate, the Bradenton Maruders, lead off the prospect-watch list in the West division of the FSL with left-hander Michael Kennedy.

Kennedy, the fourth-round selection in 2022 for the Bucs, completed his first full season in the organization last season with just a tick over a 2.00 ERA between both FL minor leagues.

The native New Yorker features an above-average slider, while his fastball and changeup still have room for improvement.

Being a high school draftee, Kennedy’s window for growth is there, but he has the potential to be a solid breaking-ball pitcher for the organization.

Tampa Tarpons (New York Yankees): SS Roderick Arias (#3 NYY, #86 MLB)

Arias, the top-rated prospect in the international class in 2022, comes into his first year of full-season baseball with high expectations and potential for the Yankees organization.

A gifted fielder, Arias has impressive zip on his fielding work at short and is smooth in his transition.

Arias has a solid bat and above-average bat speed but is more of a contact-style hitter.

Roderick Arias has the potential to be one of the premier infielders in the game, a future Gold Glove candidate at that.

While hitting may not be his bread and butter, the young 19-year-old from the DR has the potential to be an impressive player in The Show.

Fort Myers Might Mussels (Minnesota Twins): OF Walker Jenkins (#1 MIN, #10 MLB)

The highest-ranked MLB prospect in the FSL, Walker Jenkins provides excellent pop and a solid arm; he is truly a five-tool player.

Jenkins has the form of a future Silver Slugger and has a ton of potential at the dish.

He displays MLB-level bat speed, and the exit velocity of the bat is impressive.

For a player drafted out of high school, Jenkins is well beyond his years of development and has every tool you want out of a player.

While Jenkins ideally could be slotted in as an everyday DH, he has too much to offer, which makes him a platoon player in the OF as well.

Lakeland Flying Tigers (Detroit Tigers): OF Max Clark (#1 DET, #13 MLB)

From one top prospect to another, Max Clark has the superstar qualities you want in a player.

Clark shows great discipline at the dish and is hit for contact. His fielding abilities are advanced, and he does have a great foundation for his offensive play.

Beyond that, Clark has an aura that makes him feel like a fan favorite player for the Tigers in the future.

If Clark can continue to develop his offensive game, we may see more of him in Motor City soon.

Clearwater Threshers (Philadelphia Phillies): 3B/SS Aidan Miller (#3 PHI, #61 MLB)

The local Florida native, Aidan Miller, has a great foundation heading into his first full season in the Phillies system.

Miller is an above-average hitter, possessing hard contact off the bat and solid pop. He is a solid fielder, with maybe some more development in his transitions.

While he has the foundation to build off of, Miller needs time to develop and is very much a raw hitter at this point.

As he continues to accumulate at bats and experience in the minors, Miller has the potential to be a solid bat in the lineup, slotting into a potential #7 hitter spot.

Dunedin Blue Jays (Toronto Blue Jays): SS Arjun Nimmala (#3 TOR)

The final player to watch this season is the first Indian-American player drafted across the four major US sports, Arjun Nimmala.

Nimmala is solid in all categories.

He brings a solid bat to the lineup, with improved power and solid fielding abilities.

His fielding seems to be the premier point of his game, possessing above-average arm strength.

For Nimmala, it may be a slower progression than others given his lack of play so far in the Jays system; however, Nimmala definitely has the skills there to make a meteoric rise through the Jays organization.
