The Winter Garden pitching staff held the Sanford River Rats to just one run Friday night in a seven-inning, mercy rule victory in Sanford.

Micah Takac (Mercer) got the start for the Squeeze and threw five innings allowing just the one earned run on six hits and five punchouts. Takac notched his second win of the year and lowered his ERA to 1.93. Skylar Stinson (Tallahassee CC) pitched the final two innings, giving up three hits and walking one hitter. Stinson also notched a strikeout.

Although the River Rats out hit the Squeeze, nine for Sanford and five for Winter Garden, the Squeeze benefited from seven walks and four hit batters. The total walks on the year for Winter Garden moved to 72 and hit-by-pitches jumped to 23, both which lead the Florida Collegiate Summer League. The Rats stranded eight runners on base in the ballgame.

Todd Clay (UAB) had himself a day at the plate, going 2-2 with a long-ball and a double, along with two walks. Clay’s home run was a two-run shot to left field that was a part of a big five-run sixth for the Squeeze. Clay also stole a bag and came around to score twice for Winter Garden.

The five-run sixth for Winter Garden only saw two hits for the Squeeze, one being Clay’s round-tripper. The River Rat’s hit three batters, walked two and committed an error in the field. The error by the shortstop brought in two runs for Winter Garden. The fifth and final run scored on a Kyle Kleweno (Allen County CC) sac-fly.

Cole Steinmetz (Valdosta) had a nice day at the dish as well, going 1-2 with a walk and a hit-by-pitch. Steinmetz’s lone hit was a double that was scorched down the third baseline. Steinmetz would eventually come around on a sac-fly from Zack Stokes (West Florida).

Brady Burgess (East Georgia) was tagged with the loss after throwing an inning and two thirds. Burgess allowed just one hit and one earned while walking two. The right-hander was taken out of the ball game with an arm injury after hitting a batter.

The rubber match of the three game set between the Squeeze and the River Rats will take place at Sanford Memorial Saturday night. First pitch is set for 6:30 pm EST.
