Fans all around New York were in great anticipation of this weekend’s Subway Series between the Yankees and the Mets. The Mets came into the series tying a franchise record with eleven straight wins and the best record in baseball. The Yankees who although started 1-4, are now a top the AL East and on a three game winning streak.
The Yanks sent RHP Michael Pineda (ERA 3.86) to the mound against the Mets’ RHP Jacob deGrom (ERA 2.96). After a stellar outing by Pineda and two homers by Mark Teixeira, the Yanks stopped the Mets in their tracks and took the 6-1 victory.
Teixeira hit his first homer of the night, a two run blast on a fly ball to right field with Brett Gardner on base.
To start off the third inning, Jacoby Ellsbury hit his first homer on a line drive to right. Gardner then got his second hit of the night, but would be called out at 2nd. Alex Rodriguez then walked and Teixeira then hit his second homer of the night, seventh on the season, to put the Yanks up 5-0. A sacrifice fly by Stephen Drew, sent Brian McCann home for the Yankees’ sixth run of the game.
The Mets got on the board in the top of the 6th with a sacrifice fly by Lucas Duda with Curtis Granderson in scoring position at third.
Jacob deGrom pitched five innings for the Mets allowing eight hits and six runs, striking out two batters as he falls to (2-2). Mets’ relief pitching included LHP Sean Gilmartin (ERA 3.18) who pitched the 6th, RHP Hansel Robles (ERA 0.300) who worked the 7th and RHP Erik Goeddel (ERA 0.00) who closed it out and pitched the ninth.
As for the Yankees, Pineda went 7 2/3 innings, his longest outing of the season so far,allowing five hits and one run while fanning five and advances to (3-0). LHP Chasen Shreve (ERA 1.29) then pitched the remainder of the eight and the ninth with no hits allowed.

The second game of the Subway Series will be on Saturday at 4:05pm with Matt Harvey (3-0, ERA 3.50) taking the hill for the Mets against CC Sabathia (0-3, ERA 4.35) for the Yankees.
