Who Can Breakout?: Looking at Potential Spring Training Stars For The Jays

Spring Training is right around the corner, and the Blue Jays are gearing up for a return to the MLB postseason.

After a disappointing 2024 season, the Jays are looking to capitalize on their core talent while they still can, with the additions of players like Andrés Giménez and Anthony Santander providing much-needed reinforcement.

While many players are guaranteed roster spots, Spring Training always brings surprises, with one or two players forcing their way onto the 26-man squad out of camp. With that in mind, let’s take a look at potential breakout candidates for the 2025 Blue Jays during Spring Training.

Riley Tirotta

Riley Tirotta is an intriguing candidate among the non-roster hopefuls vying for a spot on the main roster. A 15-home-run hitter last season across three different levels, Tirotta has the raw power to potentially contribute to the Blue Jays’ lineup.

However, the challenge for Tirotta is that power hitting is already one of the Blue Jays’ strengths. With the addition of Santander, combined with Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Daulton Varsho, and George Springer, Tirotta faces an uphill battle to break into the roster.

Last season was a quiet spring for Tirotta, with no at-bats during camp. But if the 26-year-old can showcase his pop and impress at the hot corner, he just might make a case for himself by the end of March.

Christian Bethancourt

Catcher is shaping up to be an intriguing position this spring, with seven candidates between the 40-man roster and non-roster invitees. While Alejandro Kirk is expected to lock down the starting catcher role, the backup spot appears to be wide open.

One player to watch in this battle is Christian Bethancourt. Once a highly regarded prospect for the Padres, Bethancourt has bounced around the league in recent years. In 2024, he appeared in 62 games split between the Marlins and Cubs.

Bethancourt is not known for his bat, but he’s a solid defensive option behind the plate. For the Panama-born catcher, Spring Training could be his ticket back to the big leagues. His veteran presence and leadership might be just what the team needs to secure him a spot on the 2025 roster.

Eric Lauer

Eric Lauer is one of the most intriguing pitchers among the non-roster invitees and could have one of the best chances to make the team out of camp. After a tough year in Milwaukee, Lauer, nicknamed “Gomer,” is looking to bounce back and return to his 2021 form.

A former first-round pick for the Padres, Lauer’s flexibility makes him a valuable asset. He could serve as the fifth starter in the rotation or be utilized as a long reliever. His past success and versatility make him a pitcher worth keeping an eye on.

Although Lauer has already established himself in the league, he still has something to prove in Toronto. Spring Training might be the perfect opportunity for him to do just that.
