Subway Series Recap: Mets Sweep Yankees With 12-3 Thrashing
The New York Mets handed the New York Yankees a 2024 Subway Series sweep for the first time since the 2013 season. The final victory of the four-game set, came after the Mets hit five home runs, scored 12 runs on 14 hits and once again handed Gerrit Cole a devastating loss.
The Yankees took an early 1-0 lead, after Gleyber Torres lead off the bottom of the first with his 10th home run on the season. The Mets answered back in the top of the third on Tyrone Taylor‘s solo blast to left field to tie the game.
In the bottom of the frame, Juan Soto launched his 26th home run on the season to put the Yankees back up at 2-1. But the Mets, whose offense has been on fire, answered right back when Pete Alonso hit a two-run home run, his 20th, over the left center field fence to put the Mets in the lead 3-2 and they never looked back.
The hits and runs kept coming in the top of the fifth, as the Mets scored two, on a Francisco Lindor bomb over the right field fence and then in the top of the sixth, Taylor singled home Jeff McNeil to increase the score to 6-2.

After a scoreless seventh, the Mets blew the game wide open in the eighth, scoring six runs to push the lead to 12-2. In the inning, Mark Vientos lead off the inning with his 13th home run, and after a McNeil double, a Jose Iglesias single and a Francisco Alvarez strikeout, Taylor reached on a fielders choice scoring McNeil in the process. Then Lindor launched his second home run of the game, a three-run shot, this time from the right side of the plate, over the left field wall to extend the lead to 11-2. The icing of the inning, came on sac fly off the bat of Vientos to make the score 12-2.
In the bottom of the ninth, Austin Wells put one back on the board for the Yankees, when he singled to right field, scoring Torres, with the Bronx Bombers third run of the game. Adrian Houser then struck out Anthony Volpe to end the game and send the Mets to their third straight win, as the Yankees dropped their second straight.
The Mets (53-48) gained a game on the second place Atlanta Braves (54-46) in the standings and will now play a pivotal four-game series against the Braves starting Thursday at Citi Field.
